COUNTRY IN FAVOUR OF MAKING MARIJUANA LEGAL

Most Canadians support legalizing marijuana, according to a new
poll.

According to the poll released Thursday, conducted by Vancouver-based
Insights West, 65 per cent of people in Canada are in favour of
legalizing pot.

Not surprisingly, 98 per cent of regular users and 96 per cent of
casual users are in favour.

Perhaps more intriguing is that 51 per cent of people who have never
used marijuana support its legalization, along with 68 per cent of
people who say they've only tried it once.

The online survey of a representative national sample also found that
three-in-four Canadians are either "somewhat" or "very" familiar with
the debate around marijuana legalization.

Thirty per cent of people are against legalizing the
drug.

Across party lines, the poll found that only 42 per cent of people who
plan to vote for the Conservative Party support legalization, compared
to 83 per cent of NDP supporters, 75 per cent of Green voters and 72
per cent of Liberal supporters.

Sixty per cent of respondents think drug prohibition has failed, and
56 believe legalizing the drug would decrease gang violence, according
to the poll.

However, 59 per cent of Canadians worry that legalizing marijuana
could cause more cases of impaired driving, 50 per cent believe it
would lead to increased use among children and teenagers.
