LEGALIZING, TAXING MARIJUANA MAKES SENSE

Re: "May's link to marijuana, health care is ironic," letter, Sept. 13.

I think the letter-writer misses Green Party Leader Elizabeth May's
point. She is not condoning expansion of marijuana use. Rather, May
acknowledges that prohibition does not work; we only have to look at
the history of prohibition and alcohol.

So why not recognize that marijuana consumption will continue, whether
it is legal or not? Once it is legalized, tax it as we do alcohol and
tobacco and use the proceeds to support our federal programs.

This just makes sense.
