POT NOT THE DRUG WE SHOULD WORRY ABOUT

Diego Di Maria ("Marijuana legalization would be big mistake," Aug.
20) writes in the letters section that legalization of marijuana will
"cause more car crashes, addiction and normalize a stoned society."

Phillip Boffey, science writer for The New York Times, writes that in
terms of society, nicotine and alcohol are much more of a problem.
However, many people like Mr. Di Maria hold on to lifelong propaganda
by the federal government that marijuana use will mean the end to
society as we know it.

As a retired drug counselor for the San Diego Unified School
District, my experience told me that alcohol is the most readily
available drug.

In how many car accidents is alcohol related? How many deaths are due
to cigarettes?
