A DRUG POLICY FOR 21ST CENTURY

Re: One toke over the line, Editorial Aug. 13

How precious. Stephen Harper announces his further crackdown on
illicit drugs as a campaign promise. Last week he told us his
favourite TV series was Breaking Bad, so we must assume this is where
he's receiving his "research" to validate his new policy initiative.

Perhaps he should check out reality: like how liberalization and
legalization of marijuana in many U.S. states has not led to an
increase in use, or how needle exchanges have reduced disease and
saved lives. Harper claims treatment is the solution, but channels
many more millions into enforcement, prosecution and incarceration.

It's time for the Conservatives to propose a drug policy for the 21st
rather than the 19th century.
