POLICE BOARD WONDERS ABOUT RULES FOR NEW MEDICAL POT LOUNGE IN CITY

GUELPH - Members of the Guelph Police Services Board had questions
about a new vapour lounge in the city where people with a prescription
can smoke medical marijuana.

"We continue to work with the city and look at the law and the
experience of communities that have one," Chief Jeff DeRuyter told
board members when asked about the establishment at Thursday's police
board meeting.

The 420 Vapour Lounge on Macdonell Street is a private lounge where
members can smoke medical marijuana. No tobacco is allowed, no drugs
are sold and guests must be 18 years or older and paid members.

"My understanding is that people using it there will be lawful,"
DeRuyter said.

Coun. Leanne Piper wondered if the city needs to form a new business
licensing category or zoning bylaw restrictions to better deal with
these types of businesses.

Judith Stoffman, solicitor for the Guelph Police Service, said Bill
45, an amendment to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, has been tabled by the
province. She said the act only talks about tobacco; Bill 45 would
expand the definition to include restrictions on e-cigarettes and vapours.

The province is seeking input on the bill, Stoffman said. And Piper
introduced a motion, which passed, to write a letter to the Ontario
Association of Police Services Boards in support of expanding the
definition of smoke-free.
