ATTACKING DRUGS

Ward 4 Councillor Calls on Residents to Lobby Provincial and Federal
Governments to Curb Drug Sale, Usage in Charlottetown

Charlottetown's Ward 4 representative continues to lobby for more
attention and emphasis on street-level drugs.

Coun. Mitchell Tweel says he made a presentation this week to the
city's police committee on concerns around the drug trade. He said he
is in favour of dedicating whatever it takes to deal with the drug
trade "head on", particularly at the street and neighbourhood level.

"The sale of drugs and drug usage is not going to be tolerated or
become entrenched into the fabric of the community," Tweel said.
"Selling drugs and the use of drugs in the neighbourhoods where city
schools exist is a recipe for disaster."

Tweel has argued for some time that two officers need to be added to
the street crime unit.

A rash of break and enters made the news last fall, which Tweel links
to the drug issue.

"It is common knowledge that the true motivation for the unlimited
break and enters, home invasions, robberies and thefts is the direct
result of the sale of drugs and intense drug usage."

The councillor said action must taken at every level, calling on
residents to lobby politicians at the provincial and federal levels
to act as well.
