ARRESTS NOT STOPPING THE TRADE IN DRUGS

Re: "Eight arrested in simultaneous drug raids," March 27.

The arrests reported are similar to many others reported in the Times
Colonist. It seems to be the same story over and over again. We are
not stopping the trade in drugs.

It is not my intention to belittle the efforts of police. I have no
doubt that each of these arrests represents many hours of painstaking
work. Nor do I mean to suggest that this effort is entirely wasted. It
does contribute to public safety. It means that aspiring drug dealers
don't have to shoot their way into the business. They can simply wait
for the current batch of drug dealers to be arrested.

Is there a better approach? Will we have to lift the prohibition on at
least some drugs?
