FDLE LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION AFTER DEPUTY FATALLY SHOOTS MAN IN DELTONA

A man who was shot in the face by a Volusia County deputy during a
drug investigation at a Deltona home Wednesday morning has died.

He was identified as 26-year-old Derek Cruice.

Five others - three men and two women - were at the house in the 800
block of Maybrook Drive when deputies arrived with a narcotics search
warrant, Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gary Davidson said.

He said "Cruice's actions caused the deputy to perceive a threat."

The deputy, Todd Raible, 36, fired once, shooting Cruice in the face
just inside the doorway of the home just after Davidson said.

"It has since been determined that Cruice wasn't armed," Davidson said.

The circumstances are under investigation by the Florida Department
of Law Enforcement.

Cruice was taken to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City as
a "trauma alert," Davidson said.

Raible, a narcotics investigator, was not hurt. He was hired by the
Sheriff's Office in March 2005.

Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson described Raible as "very shaken."

He said the search was part of an "ongoing narcotics investigation."

"They were met with resistance, and a shooting occurred," Johnson
said during a news briefing in Deltona.

6:30 a.m., Investigators who searched the house found 217 grams of
marijuana, a scale, a drug ledger, marijuana smoking pipes, plastic
bags and about $3,000 in cash, Davidson said.

Johnson said FDLE would provide details after its investigation is complete.

The other people who were in the house at the time of the shooting
will be questioned, Johnson said.

"The house has been emptied so that the house can stay in the shape
it was for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct their
investigation," Johnson said.

The deputy is on temporary administrative leave.
