OPEN LETTER TO MY TENANTS

To the editor: As a landlord, I want to clarify the "no smoking"
policy in my tenants' lease because Alaska voters recently legalized marijuana.

One concern of mine has always been the wall-yellowing nicotine
damage and odor caused by tobacco smoke. Cannabis smoke doesn't seem
to cause this damage.

As a private property owner, I make the rules, but I don't see how
cannabis consumed in edibles or smoked in moderation has any negative
effect on the property value.

Like alcohol, cannabis is now a legal option. My tenants' health and
welfare are my concern, so if they drink alcohol or partake on my
property, I hope they will do so in moderation.

I encourage them to enjoy this new freedom responsibly (if they like)
in the privacy of their rental or on the porch. They should respect
others downwind. Just as with loud music, if their behavior affects
others, I'll get involved. If it doesn't cause a problem, then no problem.

P.S. Growing pot will not be allowed in the community vegetable garden.
