MARIJUANA CRIME BILL DELAYED UNTIL NEXT WEEK

JUNEAU - A controversial bill dealing with the gray areas in Alaska's criminal code created by the voter initiative to legalize marijuana won't return to committees until next week.

Legislative aides working on the bill said additional time is needed to make sure the rewrite of the legislation is acceptable.  The initial bill was panned by officials and marijuana legalization advocates.

The rewritten bill had been expected to make an appearance this week as the Legislature is pushing to fast track the bill to get into law before the initiative goes into effect on Feb.  24.

Ballot Measure 2 legalizes use and personal possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for people 21 and older.  The bills had intended to clarify laws surrounding driving and underage consumption as well as clarifying how the initiative interacts with existing crimes.
