CITY OFFICIALS TO DECIDE MARIJUANA BALLOT FUTURE

After more than two hours of closed-door deliberations in the chamber
of Judge Rae Lee Chabot at the Oakland County Circuit Court, the
parties to the Oak Park marijuana ballot proposal case said the city
officials will deliberate on the legal matter and decide the future
of the ballot proposal on Monday.

The Safer Oak Park Coalition filed a lawsuit last week demanding the
city put their marijuana legalization proposal on the August ballot.
Attorneys for Oak Park argued the city needs to get the ballot
language approved by the state's Attorney General's office before
putting it on the August ballot.

"We have to present this to our elected officials and let elected
officials make judgment on it," Erik Tungate, Oak Park City Manager,
said after discussing the case with the city's attorney and the
attorney representing Safer Oak Park-Coalition. Tungate said the city
has not heard back from the Attorney General's offiffice yet.

Members and supporters of the groups that filed the lawsuit in the
court room did not have much to say either about the possible outcome
of the case.

"We are still in the process of negotiation and we are not really in
a position to comment one way or the other," said Tim Beck, the
cofounder of Safer Michigan Coalition.
