WANT STRONG REGULATION OF POT? ATTEND MEETING

The Mercury News cover story on marijuana grow houses (Page 1A, June
8) highlights the need for robust medical marijuana regulations in
San Jose. This Tuesday at 7 p.m., the City Council will be voting on
regulations and a zoning ordinance. We need clear rules that our
police and DA can enforce, that protect children and neighborhoods,
and that ensure seriously ill patients get the medicine they need. In
our annual community survey, 60 percent of San Jose residents agreed
that we need strong and effective regulation. However, medical
marijuana lobbyists are making the rounds at City Hall, putting a
glossy face on the industry and urging the council to support
watered-down regulations. They are also circulating petitions to put
a weak regulatory system on the ballot. The City Council needs to
hear from parents, educators and other concerned residents. Please
contact the City Council (www. sanjoseca.gov/council) or come to City
Hall on Tuesday.

Mayor of San Jose
