FORMER HATTER SUES CITY POLICE OVER POT ARREST FROM 2012

A former city resident charged with drug and theft allegations two
years ago has launched a $750,000 lawsuit against city police.

Corey Maxwell, 50, had the charges against him withdrawn in August
2012 after police charged him with marijuana production-related
charges stemming from a search warrant executed for an allegedly
stolen XBox.

Maxwell had a Health Canada licence to grow up to 73 pot plants and
possess up to 3,285 grams of the drug for relief of a chronic back
injury.

The court ordered all the man's growing equipment and marijuana be
returned to him following the federal Crown's decision to withdraw all
charges.

The lawsuit filed Friday claims police forcibly arrested a
non-resistant Maxwell during an unlawful search of his premises
causing aggravation to his back injury which resulted in him being
hospitalized for two weeks.

The suit also claims that as a result of the search, the home was
condemned, two dogs in the household were locked in a room for
24-hours without food or water, a pet frog died, and the home was
condemned forcing the man and his family to relocate.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
