HOA RIGHT TO PROTECT BACKYARDS

Regarding your editorial, "You know marijuana has arrived" (Opinions,
Thursday):

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn the homeowners association for
banning marijuana use in backyards and other open spaces around the
home. It's the nature of smoke to drift, and what starts in one
person's backyard quickly becomes each neighbor's problem.

Have you ever lived next to a pot smoker? I have, and it was a
nightmare. There were many days when I could not use my own backyard
because my neighbor was lighting up on his back porch, right next to
mine. The smell was overwhelming. I would not send my kids out into
our own backyard to play because of the smoke.

I can understand why the HOA took this step and applaud its desire to
help each homeowner be able to enjoy their own personal space.
