CITY CLARIFIES POSITION ON PRO-MARIJUANA EVENT

Marijuana supporters may rally on April 20 in support of the
legalization of the drug but the city wants to make it clear they'll
be doing it without official permission.

Lori- Dawn Cavin, the chair of Brantford's special events advisory
team, said Thursday that while the rally's organizers had been given
an application form to book Victoria Park, where the rally is
scheduled to take place, the city decided it will not issue a permit
after learning from an Expositor article that a group "light up" is
planned for 4:20 p.m.

"We would never issue a permit that would contravene our policies and
allow for illegal activity in our parks," said Cavin.

"They still have the right to be in a public space, but in terms of
the event, we're not permitting the activity."

The co-organizer of the Brantford 420 Freedom Rally, Brittni
Mitchell, said previously that while she had notified the city of the
event, she didn't expect to sign anything that would guarantee the
behaviour of others.

Similar rallies are held across Canada on April 20 - a date that is
associated with marijuana culture, along with the time of 4: 20.

The local event is being held by the Brantford Cannabis Club and will
feature guest speakers, prizes, some music and marijuana.
