THEY'RE MAKING A MISTAKE

Well, it looks as though being able to use marijuana legally in
Colorado is the big news maker of the new year. Although how state
law can trump federal law is news to me.

After reading the stories on the front page on new years day I was
drawn to Jacquielynn Floyd's column in the metro section. The story
was about the young drug addict who was killed while breaking into a
neighbor's house while he was high on drugs. A sad story indeed.

During my 35 years in law enforcement I worked "dope" for about 10
years. While I'm sure there are people who use pot and never use
anything stronger, every hard core addict whether it was cocain,
heroin, or meth had one thing in common. They started with marijuana
or alcohol at a young age.

Only time will tell what the new laws in Colorado and Washington will
bring. But this old narc thinks it's a big mistake. Remember the old
public service ad line "Why do you think they call it dope?"
