SECOND READING FOR MARIJUANA ORDINANCE IN ZEELAND TOWNSHIP

Zeeland Township - A medical marijuana ordinance is set for a second reading Tuesday night in Zeeland township.

The ordinance would impose such limits as requiring medical marijuana to being grown inside a home, behind locked doors.  The space dedicated to a growing operation cannot exceed 20 percent of the total living space and households would be limited to have one person with a valid state registration.

The proposed measure would bar dispensaries, storefront operations, cooperatives or combined growing efforts.  Caregivers would be limited to five state-certified clients and barred from posting signs, notices or other indicators that marijuana is being grown at a home.

Other restrictions require a 1,000-foot minimum distance from playgrounds, daycare operations, schools, churches, community centers or any recreational or educational site.

Similar and, in some cases more restrictive, ordinances have been adopted in Port Sheldon Township and Holland Township.  Holland Township caregivers must provide detailed plans for the area of a home being modified and state the maximum number of plants to be grown.  Holland Township's required 1,000 perimeter includes any site used by children, such as schools and playgrounds, as well as any sexually oriented business.

Zeeland's board of trustees meet at 7 p.m.  Tuesday at the township offices, 6582 Byron Road.
