WORKING OUT THE DETAILS OF LEGALIZED MARIJUANA

"Shameful failure of legislature in killing pot DUI bill," April 26
letter to the editor.

I continue to be astounded at the daily assault in The Post on
legalized marijuana. The letter to the editor referring to the
powerful marijuana lobby in Colorado seems ironic since the powerful
alcohol lobby is what has ensured that marijuana stayed illegal since
the early 20th century.

Speaking of alcohol, maybe The Post could shoot for a little
perspective by publishing some comparisons between alcohol
consumption and marijuana consumption. You know, like comparing
mortality and morbidity rates of alcohol vs. marijuana, including
automobile deaths and injuries directly related to alcohol; like
comparing sociological issues of broken homes, domestic violence, and
lost jobs due to alcohol use vs. marijuana use.

Perhaps such comparisons might lead our thinking citizenry to
conclude that as long as alcohol consumption is legal, it is the
height of absurdity to criminalize marijuana. Perhaps our thinking
citizenry has already concluded that.
