LEGALIZATION OF CANNABIS MAKES FISCAL SENSE

In response to Bernard Schoenburg's column (Dec. 16), the Illinois GOP
should find its political compass and look to ending cannabis
prohibition as a viable way to save taxpayer money and bring in
revenue by taxing this currently illegal market.

Small government has no place in adults' gardens and should legally
tolerate the responsible use of cannabis. Any type of legal market
would have restrictions on driving and underage use, but by continuing
this failed policy they are missing an opportunity to harness the
shifting public opinion.

Given the fiscal state of Illinois, an option that saves money and
brings it in should be on the table, especially for the
Republicans.

However, mention the words marijuana or cannabis in the statehouse
halls and they go running because they feel they're going to appear
soft on crime.

They need to realize that the time spent for an officer to
investigate, arrest and appear in court to prosecute nonviolent
cannabis offenders could be time spent going after more dangerous and
serious criminals.
