ADDICTIONS WOULD RISE IF DRUGS WERE LEGALIZED

A response to Ray Raino ("Legalize drugs to help solve national debt,"
Dec. 5). I too recall the Prohibition era, as I lived in Chicago.

It may be that those who wished for alcohol then were not corrupted
with it at the end.

I can imagine the number of people we would have addicted in no time.
That would cost millions to cure. We have enough now committing
horrible crimes in order to get their fix.

As I told young men who were in the service with me, you may feel you
need a high to escape, but you will still have the problem when you
come down.
