COLUMN ON MARIJUANA WAS CLOSED MINDED BY AUTHOR'S ADMISSION

Re: Marijuana busts spark online discussions (column), "For the record,
I do not support marijuana. No argument presented, no matter how
convincing it may seem, will ever change that," asserted the managing
editor of Northumberland News.

This an appalling admission of closed-minded thinking burdened with
the arrogance of infallible certainty. An editorial is a form of
public guidance towards the good, towards the better.

Crystal Crimi's anti-pot proselytization is full of simple-think
formulas that rehash Reefer Madness and leads towards decades of
proven failure; the 30-year war against drugs. Enormous resources have
been spent in the pursuit of failure.

I would like to have refuted each point in her argument, but what
would be accomplished? Her mind is closed, by her own admission. It is
a denial of dialogue. What an appalling example to show to youth by a
newspaper editor posturing as a role model.

The young people of Northumberland should learn that it is to their
personal growth advantage to keep an open mind to everything. Question
authority. A closed mind is like a noun; no action, whereas real life
is a verb: action. A closed mind is like an immovable boulder in a
river of life and history that passes by.

Readers of this newspaper deserve better from its professional writers
- -- even an amateur writer like me knows that.
