SHERIFF TELLS KIWANIS CLUB THAT BATH SALTS HAVE HIT WITH 'VENGEANCE'

"We're effective when communities are involved. It's stronger when
communities are involved. We need each other."

Guernsey County Sheriff Mike McCauley spoke those words to Cambridge
Kiwanians Tuesday. He paid the club a visit to update members on
several aspects of his job. Among them: Bath salts.

"That drug has hit us with full vengeance," he said.

Bearing brand names such as K2 and Spice, the salts are cheap and
easily accessible hallucinogens that are available at more than one
location in Cambridge.

Though a misdemeanor to possess them, it is a felony to sell them.

"It's a felony," Sheriff McCauley reiterated.

Several hundred pound of marijuana were seized in a raid earlier in
the week following the department's annual fly-over search for the
illegal substance.

Scrap metal dealers will see tougher restrictions, according to SB
171, the sheriff said. The law would require dealers to accept
identification from folks submitting items for scrap and retain those
records for a year.

Sheriff McCauley said some dealers accept items without questioning
their origins. For example, numerous brass veteran grave markers,
lengths of guardrail or large rolls of copper wiring are some of the
items which should be questioned.

"That's one of the problems that we deal with," he said.

But the sheriff and deputies are more effective when the public
provides tips and other information regarding criminal activities.

President Nathan Larrick led the meeting, attended by 34 members and
four guests. Among the members was Stephanie Coulter, wife of member
Lynn Coulter and newest Kiwanian inducted during the meeting by Tom Atkinson.

Max Treier led the a cappella singing of "We Salute Kiwanis." Dr,
Dayle Snyder gave the invocation. Bill Shepard led members in
reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Rick Long and Dale Ward manned the
hospitality table.

Jeanie Wilson collected happy dollars. Don Sigman won the drawing.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing
the world one child and one community at a time.
