DRUGS: 'HIGH STAKES GAMBLE'

Police Release Second Poster In Operation X Series

Abbotsford Police have released the second poster in their Operation
X series, which is aimed at informing young people about the risks of
using street drugs.

The poster, like all in the series, will be displayed on the walls of
Abbotsford high schools and in public places such as recreation
centres and bus stop benches.

The newest creation depicts several brightly coloured pills beside
stacks of poker chips with the statement, "High stakes gamble. This
is one bet not worth taking."

Const. Ian MacDonald said the intention is to demonstrate that people
who use street drugs are gambling with their lives.

"Street drugs are comprised of unknown ingredients and are of unknown
potency which can, therefore, cause unknown effects to your health."

MacDonald said Operation X focuses on decision-making and choices,
rather than stating that something is "bad" and shouldn't be done. He
said the Abbotsford Police Department has received strong support for
the program, especially from local families whose loved ones have
died from ecstasy use.

"Our hope is that these posters and the stories told by those brave
families will generate discussions with youth about street drugs," he said.
