University administrators announced today that the entire campus, a publicly funded facility, will be closed to "unauthorized visitors" and "non-affiliates" on April 20 in an effort to end the annual 4/20 pot-smoking gathering. Those who violate the closure, which ends at 6 p.m., will be charged with trespassing. "The size of the crowd has become unmanageable, and limits our faculty, staff and students from getting to class, entering buildings and doing their basic work," CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano said in a press release. "It needs to end." Students, faculty, staff and university affiliates will need their campus IDs to get on and around campus that day. Police checkpoints will be set up at major campus entrances to check for people's Buff OneCards. "Those not affiliated with CU-Boulder will not be permitted on campus and face tickets for trespassing," the release states. "Those cited for trespassing face punishment of up to six months in jail and a $750 fine." A special registration program will be extended to visitors who have genuine need to get on campus to participate in meetings or conferences, for instance. Those individuals will need to check in at the Administrative and Research Center on East Campus, at 3100 Marine St., and must register online at www.colorado.edu/april20 or call 303-492-4636. Norlin Quad will be closed entirely, regardless of campus affiliation, officials say, and visitors will not be allowed to park on campus. "A large presence of police officers from CU-Boulder and regional agencies will be present," the release says. CU organizations and academic units have been advised to move non-essential meetings and gatherings that require visitors to later in the spring semester. Regent Drive will be closed to through traffic, with the exception of buses, from approximately 1:30 to 6 p.m. The routes taken by the Buff Bus and RTD's Stampede, 209 and J routes will change between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. See www.colorado.edu/pts/news/index.html for more details. No non-students will be allowed to attend the campus-sanctioned concert with Wyclef Jean, and all CU students will have to present their BuffOne cards. The show is expected to run from 2 to 7 p.m. - --- MAP posted-by: Matt
