OXFORD VILLAGE TO DISCUSS MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARIES

The Village of Oxford is considering taking steps many Oakland County
locales have taken regarding the issue of medical marijuana in their
communities.

The village council will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, Feb. 14 to address whether medical marijuana dispensaries in
the village will be permitted to operate.

Oxford council will present language for an amendment at the Feb. 14
council meeting to ban medical marijuana dispensaries in the village.
A vote is required by members of the village council on whether to
allow the dispensaries to operate.

Both the council meeting and vote on the proposed amendment by the
village council will be held at village offices, 22 W. Burdick St. in Oxford.

Medical marijuana has been a hot issue ever since the Michigan
Medical Marihuana Act went into effect in 2008. Although dispensaries
are legal under the 2008 act a recent ruling in 2011 by the Michigan
Court of Appeals states that dispensaries are, in fact, not legal.
The 2011 ruling against a Mount Pleasant dispensary states that
"medical use of marijuana, as defined by the Michigan Medical
Marihuana Act, does not include patient-to-patient sales of
marijuana, and no other provision of the act can be read to permit such sales."
