LEGALIZING MARIJUANA WOULD CREATE JOBS

Dear editor:

Re: Marijuana legalization is not a pressing need, Jan 23.

Legalizing marijuana would indeed create jobs and go to strengthening
both our Canadian economy and our international image -- just like
when medical marijuana was first announced.

It would reduce federal spending and taxes. Moreover, it would help
safeguard youth and communities, stop the enabling of organized crime
and present Canada as a nation that reflects intellect over ideology.
Legalizing marijuana would indeed go to offsetting pressing needs.

The Vancouver-based International Centre for Science in Drug Policy's
latest report demonstrates the clear failure of U.S. cannabis
prohibition. It supports calls for evidence-based models to legalize
and regulate the use of cannabis.

The report has already received the support and endorsement of the
British Medical Journal, one of the world's most influential medical
journals, which has published a commentary in support of the report's
findings, as well as the support of more than 60 of the International
Centre for Science in Drug Policy's scientific network members from
more than 30 countries.

Guelph Liberal MP Frank Valeriote should be congratulated for his
courage, candidness and insight.
