MEDICAL MARIJUANA OPTIONS WEIGHED IN ALLEGAN TOWNSHIP

ALLEGAN - Allegan Township, like many other area municipalities, will
take some time to study how to regulate medical marijuana.

The township board earlier this month informally decided to put a hold
on any decision "to give us some time to put something together,"
Supervisor Steve Schulz said.

The township, Schulz said, will probably look at a similar approach to
the city of Allegan's, which is focusing on the location of
dispensaries, including minimum distances from schools.

"We're not going to outlaw it totally," Schulz said of medical
marijuana, which was approved by Michigan voters in 2008.
Municipalities that have passed bans on medical marijuana are facing
legal challenges, he noted.

The township also does not want to limit people who might benefit from
medical marijuana, according to Schulz.

"We do have to allow them," the township supervisor said, adding,
though, that township officials want some restrictions.
