BRIGHTON EXTENDS MEDICAL MARIJUANA MORATORIUM

The Brighton City Council has approved extending for six months its
existing moratorium against the sale or dispensation of medical marijuana.

City planners and attorneys are working on an ordinance on how to deal
with a medical marijuana law approved by voters two years ago. Other
communities, including Brighton Township, have extended their
moratoriums as they work on an ordinance.

"More research has to be done on it," Brighton Mayor Ricci Bandkau
said.

Several Livingston County municipalities have handled the medical
marijuana issue in similar fashion because they feel pressured to have
some type of ordinance on the books in case a medical marijuana
dispensary aims to set up shop within their limits. In many cases,
local governments are conflicted between enforcing state law and
federal law, which continues to ban the use and possession of marijuana.

The council approved the extension Thursday evening.
