LETTER OF THE WEEK

To the editor:

Re: "Heroin on the menu as SALOME study flies under radar," Aug. 25.

When it was first brought up years ago-- that nurses were already
facilitating/supervising street drugs--many of my nursing colleagues
said it runs contra to our professional ethics. Now we have SALOME,
and again nurses are roped in to help addicts "tie off." All this
funded by taxpayers and private advocates.

My added concern is that "it will all happen under the watchful eye
of nurses from Providence Health Care." This is a "Catholic health
care community," according to its webpage.

I am just amazed that they are involved now in SALOME and support
such a project. Very disillusioning. I cannot see that SALOME is for
the well-being of the addicts or the community.

Thank you for keeping this subject open.
