MEXICO CAN'T GO IT ALONE

Re: Legalizing drugs the only answer, Opinion Aug. 11

Mexico's President Felipe Calderon has just expressed that he is still
opposed to drug legalization in our country. But, on the other hand,
he promotes a serious debate on this matter.

First of all, if drugs are not legalized in the rest of world, or in
the United States, such a measure will not work because the price of
drugs is not determined by Mexicans, but by consumers abroad.

Secondly, Mexico simply cannot move ahead on this path ignoring the
North American market. If Mexico would legalize unilaterally the drug
consumption, the country could easily fall in the worst of all
possible scenarios, bringing all kind of advantages to a commerce that
would continue to be linked to crime and illegality in our common
neighbour country.
