GROW-OP FIRE LEADS TO ARSON CHARGE

A 52-year-old man has been charged with arson after his alleged
marijuana grow-op went up in flames.

Winnipeg police say the blaze at the home in the 1600 block of
Alexander was reported at 12 p.m. Oct. 18, causing about $180,000
damage but no injuries.

Police say the fire was caused by overloaded and faulty wiring used to
grow marijuana.

WPS Const. Jason Michalyshen said the operation used costly equipment,
including heat lamps.

"There can be some pretty extravagant set-ups," Michalyshen
said.

The man previously arrested in connection with the grow-op, now faces
a charge of arson by negligence.

Michalyshen said it's important to remember the dangers of the
grow-ops, and not just the drug itself.

"The hazards that they cause to communities, that home, the
neighbouring homes is really important," he said.

He reminds the public to be aware of what is happening in their
communities and contact police.
