DAYS OF 'IGNORANCE AND FEAR' NEVER LEFT THE ISLAND

I too am compelled to address a deceptive and ill-informed letter
from Jerome Kellner regarding marijuana (Letters, May 9). Avo Tomji
(Letters, May 14) wrote: "Let's not return to the days of ignorance and fear."

Well, there must be two Maui's because we cannabis users have been
living in fear of police and judicial ignorance constantly. There is
no returning to what we have not yet left.

Good cannabis has all the zap of good coffee. If the police and
government would stop lying about it, they would stop being seen as
an enemy by many of us law-abiding, regular people. Many of us can't
stand alcohol and the violence it brings and resent the police for
knowingly lying about cannabis for years.

Those lies resulted in the formation of LEAP - Law Enforcement
Against Prohibition - by police who could no longer stand to lie.
