POLICE SAY LINDSAY-BROWN'S DEATH CERTAINLY SUICIDE

Sergeant Joe Peterson of the Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit said
it's pretty much certain that Sam Lindsay-Brown took his own life.

Theories have been circulating that Lindsay-Brown may have been
murdered in a hit by someone inside the prison.

But Peterson, who was charged with investigating the death, said all
evidence shows the young Revelstoke resident committed suicide.

"The doors were all timed and locked," Peterson said. "Around 1
o'clock in the afternoon a trustee walked by his cell. He was in
there all by himself. Nobody was in or around (it).

"He noticed a towel had been placed over the window. That's not easy
to do. It had to be jammed into a tiny crack."

Peterson said the trustee notified the jailer, who came and opened
the door to the cell where Lindsay-Brown was found dead; hanging from
a noose made out of his bed sheet.

He added that committing suicide in a prison cell is no easy task,
and the light fixture Lindsay-Brown had used to secure the sheet was
designed to prevent such action.

"It's sloping in all directions so nothing can be hung from it,"
Peterson said. "He somehow managed to tear it away from the wall so
he could jam a bed sheet in the edges of it so it would hold his weight.

"If somebody is intent on killing themselves, they can kill themselves."

Peterson said there's no way to know if Lindsay-Brown's suicide was
the result of threats - but jail records show no cause to suspect it.

"We have all telephone calls from this jail, in and out, recorded,"
he said. "And there's nothing like that that happened while he was
in our jail.

" Nobody will ever know in many of these cases what was said a year
ago, or when he took the job to smuggle the dope."
