PROJECT KROSSBOW SUCCEEDS IN BOW VALLEY

An RCMP initiative targeting the trafficking of controlled substances
in communities throughout the Bow Valley corridor called Project
Krossbow, was a success according to police.

The project was a large and detailed investigation than ran from Nov.
2007 to April 2008, involving street-level and mid-level drug
transactions.

Undercover purchases were conducted at various locations including
businesses, residences and on the streets. The joint effort to combat
the drug trafficking issue in the corridor involved RCMP detachments
and general investigation sections in Banff, Canmore, Cochrane as well
as the Calgary Police Service and RCMP Drug Enforcement members.

Although the operation wrapped up in the spring of 2008, police are
now revealing successes of the investigation.

The project resulted in several charges related to the trafficking of
cannabis marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy in Banff, Canmore and Cochrane.

A key component of the Bow Valley RCMP's community policing focus is
drug education awareness and enforcement activities.

There has been a concentrated effort by the Banff, Canmore, Cochrane
detachments to increase public awareness and the number of drug
seizures in the Bow Valley for 2008.

The RCMP have been active in the local schools for a number of years
teaching elementary students the Drug Abuse Resistance Education
(DARE) program. The DARE program is designed to teach youth how to
resist drugs and make healthy lifestyle choices.
