HARPER GOVERNMENT IS MAKING EFFORTS TO PREVENT YOUTH CRIME

I would like to thank the New Hamburg Independent for writing that I
am a "good representative" for the riding in your Oct. 15 editorial. I
must, however, fill the gaps in on some other points presented.

It was written that, "the Conservative measures to reduce youth crime
would be more appealing if more social supports were in place to deal
with the root of the problem." I agree wholeheartedly.

Since the unfortunate death of one teen at the hands of another
shortly after my first election, I have taken this issue to heart and
pursued every opportunity to restore balance to our youth justice system.

Our government believes that social interventions are crucial to
preventing youth crime, as do your editorial writers.

Prime Minister Harper created the Youth Gang Prevention Fund
specifically to invest in local community projects that help youth
avoid a life of crime. We agreed that more emphasis on prevention was
required, and committed to increase the funding for these programs and
to extend their life.

We also recognize that substance addictions are a major contributor to
crime problems. To address this, we introduced Canada's first National
Anti-Drug Strategy, which included funds for a National Youth
Intervention Program.

I'm proud that our government is providing the strong social support
mechanisms that will put youth on the path to success. I'm equally
proud that we are giving judges the choice to impose stronger
penalties when they feel the case warrants them.

Thank you again for your excellent editorial, as well as your coverage
of the recent campaign.
