DARING TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY

New Houston/Granisle RCMP member Const. Brandon Brett will be heading
the District's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program once
he completes the training.

"It could mean that we have no one leading the program until the new
year when he is able to go to the courses," S.Sgt. Sean Wadelius said.
"But it is a priority and we will have someone in place."

The program takes the police officers out to the school to give the
kids instruction on how to deal with peer pressure. Bringing the
officers into the schools is a valuable way to get the kids to see the
good they do in the community.

The foundation for the program is elementary school students in Grades
5 to 8, hopefully discouraging drug use before the kids are old enough
to be experiencing the peer pressure.

"The kids can see the officers outside of situations where we are
pulling mom or dad over on the roads," Wadelius said.
