But, the fact that a significant number of individuals now face criminal proceedings in connection to an ongoing drug bust is heartening. Time and time again, we hear people in this community complain about the impacts of drug use in our society. From needles left on front lawns to garages smashed by petty thieves looking for easily sold items, drug use brings about immeasurable harm. For whatever reason, it Prince Albert has a drug problem somewhat abnormal for a community of its size. Naturally, the rank-and-file citizen has called for action. Now, perhaps, they can see the results of those pleas. The arrests and criminal proceedings for those alleged to have been connected with the flow of drugs into this area will take time to process: a period best measured in years, not months. We ask that the impact of drug use on Prince Albert factor heavily into those proceedings, and especially at any sentencing hearings. Drug trafficking is never a victimless crime. Above and beyond the measurable increase in health challenges, the increased incidence of violence and the decreased function in society, the secondary effects of drugs on a community are likewise notable. As we look toward embracing a better future, we need to do all we can to ensure our citizens are safe and healthy. There is no place in a healthy community for those that deal in the poisons of narcotics. - --- MAP posted-by: Larry Seguin
