1984 IN PITT MEADOWS

Editor, The News:

Re: An invasion of privacy (The News, May 26).

The police have been doing inspections on potential public safety
hazards in houses that have a high consumption of electricity. In
other words, they are looking for grow ops.

It appears George Orwell's 1984 has arrived in Pitt
Meadows.

The bylaw enforcement officer said about the inspections: "It's
really, really good. It is making a difference. We have a safer community."

Well, that's the excuse Mussolini and Hitler gave for ransacking
through people's houses.

Many people say that if you have nothing to hide why get your knickers
in a knot about these inspections. What's at stake here, though, is
our civil liberties.

We flaunt to other countries the freedom and rights we have. We've
gone to war in the name of these freedoms and rights. So why now are
we trying to convince ourselves that these inspections are not
stepping over any civil liberty boundaries?
