RCMP - DRUGS BEHIND CRIME

BIBLE HILL - Rampant drug use among young people is behind most of
the crime in Colchester County, police said Friday.

"We've noticed a rise in property-related crimes in this area, and
it's directly related to young people involved in the drug scene, said
RCMP Sgt. Dave Darrah. "Assaults, robberies -- we're finding they're
linked back to illegal drug use.

This week, a 15-year-old boy arrested in a burglary case had to be
hospitalized with symptoms of cocaine withdrawal shortly after his
arrest, Sgt. Darrah said.

Teenagers and young adults steal to fund their addictions, he
said.

"They're stealing, they're doing property crimes, the full gamut, he
said.

Youngsters are getting hooked on cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and
prescription drugs like OxyContin and Dilaudid, thanks to a steady
supply coming through organized crime networks, Sgt. Darrah said.

There are small-level dealers and more organized drug suppliers, he
said. The Hells Angels biker gang no longer has a clubhouse in the
province but members and associates live here, he said.

"Organized criminal groups in Nova Scotia thrive off the illegal drug
trade, he said.

When children's grades and attendance slip in school, friendships and
habits change, and they begin keeping odd hours, parents may suspect
drug use, Sgt. Darrah said.

Parents can confirm their suspicions with a blood test, he said.

"They should seek help and advice from a health professional to
resolve the problem.
