NEW STREET ENFORCEMENT UNIT TO FOCUS ON DRUGS

They won't be dressed like the men in black but rather in plain
clothing to remain unidentified by the public.

A new Street Crime Enforcement Unit will be created on the South Shore
and the Queens RCMP will gain one new officer to be a part of this
unit.

In December 2006 the Provincial Government announced it would provide
funding for 250 new police officers to be placed throughout the 55
municipalities in Nova Scotia.

Staff Sergeant Bruno Deveau with the Queens RCMP says their new
officer will work out of the Bridgewater Police Department along with
the two officers being added to the Lunenburg RCMP and the Bridgewater
PD.

These three officers will make up the Street Crime Enforcement Unit
that will focus on street level drug enforcement, judicial release
orders along with other serious crimes in Queens and Lunenburg Counties.

Deveau would like to see the new unit vigorously tackle street level
drugs.

Deveau says the Queens RCMP hears about drug issues continuously from
the general public, council and members of the RCMP.

Deveau sees the new Street Crime Enforcement Unit doing a lot of
pro-active work and the new officer is expected to arrive April 1st.
