QUESNEL TODDLER TESTS POSITIVE FOR COCAINE

RCMP were called to G.R. Baker Hospital around midnight Tuesday after
a two-year-old child tested positive for cocaine intoxication.

RCMP said medical screening tests on the child and its mother
confirmed both had cocaine in their bodies.

An investigation by the RCMP and the Ministry for Child and Family
Development is underway.

"This incident is particularly troubling given that one of the
victims is a two-year-old child," said Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Gary
Clark-Marlow. "The parents of the child are both known to police.
Both are adult residents of Quesnel. The child has been placed into
protective foster care pending the outcome of the investigation."

Clark-Marlow said that it was still a mystery where the cocaine came
from and how it was ingested.

"This incident certainly demonstrates the dangers associated to the
use and distribution of cocaine," he said. "It is fortunate that the
results were not more tragic."

To protect the identify of the child, the names of the parties
involved are not being released.
