CRYSTAL-METH SOLUTION FOUND IN ALL OF US, SAYS REPORT

Just as crystal-meth addiction affects an entire community, the
solution also lies in a community-based approach, according to a
study commissioned by the City of Chilliwack.

The recently-completed study by a group of researchers at the
University College of the Fraser Valley found the best approach to
the meth problem is focused on community, not just criminal issues.

"That means that the education, health, social services, fire,
emergency response, retail and safety sectors all have a role to play
in combatting the problem," said criminology professor Darryl Plecas.

Retailers, for example, should recognize when someone is amassing
large quantities of certain chemicals.

"First responders need to be aware that they can do something more
than simply arresting people," Plecas added.

"We wanted to examine best practices in terms of community response
to this problem and find out how we could respond most effectively,"
said Chilliwack Mayor Clint Hames.

The report will be shared with 185 municipalities throughout B.C.
