PAY PEOPLE TO BEAT UP DRUG DEALERS

Dear Editor,

There has been a lot of clamouring lately for a rehab/detox facility
for meth and crack cocaine addicts. The point I'd like to inject (no
pun intended) into the debate is that these people are all in dire
straits because they've broken the law. If society starts coddling
lawbreakers with expensive facilities when they haven't even served
time, a lot of people are going to wonder what's going on. They might
think they can do illegal drugs because they can always depend on rehab.

The September 19 Beacon Herald ran a front page story in which a
former meth addict said: "People get stuck in a whirlwind of hell on
drugs." I think that's the message that needs to be put out there
continually for those who are contemplating breaking the law in this way.

It would be fairer to provide financial support for anyone who gets
so exasperated with our police inaction that they assault a meth
dealer themselves. And, while we're on the subject, why not provide a
week-long catered lock-up for hard-core tobacco addicts?
