SANDUSKY POLICE SAY DRUG UNIT GOING STRONG

Almost a year after the Sandusky Police Narcotics Unit set up shop,
drug activity tips continue to pour in.

The unit started last October after the former Erie County Drug Task
Force folded. Since May the unit has received more than 60 tips via
e-mail and phone combined, said Chief Kim Nuesse.

"To me that's just phenomenal," she said. "Those are all tips we
would not be receiving prior to this. That has made a huge impact on
the drug investigations in the city."

The Erie County Drug Task Force Unit, which started in 1989, had
members from the sheriff's office, Sandusky police and, up until
2004, a Perkins police member. The task force dissolved in January
because of lack of funding.

But police officials say the Narcotics Unit is accomplishing more
than its predecessor.

"We are a lot more visible and on the streets more," said Detective
Sgt. John Orzech, who heads up the unit.
