DANGERS OF RURAL LIVING

Gangs have moved beyond the stereotype of an urban problem and
they've also moved into Edson.

As our town has been growing we've attracted temporary workers for
the industries that are booming around us.

In many ways the growth has been positive for our town but it has
also attracted some negative aspects.

It has not been easy for Edson to deal with factors of the growth as
we were not prepared for such a fast spurt.

Some of the negative factors include higher drug use and crime rates
that are all too often connected.

As Edson's Sgt. Desautel told the Leader organized crime groups see
transient populations as attractive customers for their goods.

And in return those who develop drug problems often turn to crime to
feed their addiction.

Many of us would rather like to think of the drug activity as
something our temporary guests have brought with them and we can blame them.

However, if we stick our heads in the sand and hope the problem will
go away it will not be helpful in the long run.

As a community we need to be proactive in the fight against drugs and
crime -- and fighting the gang activity in our area.

It is not just up to one group of residents or our officials to fix
the problem for us but we all have a part to play.

Those who opt to do nothing also play a part -- but unfortunately
they are helping the problems gain more of a footing.

As a community we need to unite and decide to take action as a team.

We can report suspicious behaviour to our officials, we can ensure
that those in our town -- long term or short term residents alike --
feel welcome and have positive activities to keep them involved.

This is especially crucial for our youth.

We can also be fully aware of what is going on in our town by being
informed, connected and keeping our eyes open.

Although they may be attracted to our community and they may already
be active in our area the fight is far from over.
