COMBATING DRUG ABUSE

Drug and alcohol related issues are becoming serious concerns in all
B.C. communities and Summerland is no exception.

In addition to cases of alcohol abuse, police have also been called to
respond to numerous drug-related complaints, from trafficking
marijuana to grow operations and trafficking in other drugs.

There are some in the community who are struggling with addiction
while others here are working towards recovery.

Addictions do not just affect individuals. They also affect families
and communities.

This is why the decision to bring in a full-time drug and alcohol
abuse counsellor at the Summerland Asset Development Initiative has
been so important.

We have had part-time services here in the past and there are
addictions workers in Penticton, but neither of these options is as
effective as having a full-time service here.

Providing help for those in Summerland with addiction issues is
important, as is providing education to the rest of the community.

The need has existed for some time.

Over the past few years, two forums have been held in Summerland to
discuss drug abuse.

The new service is a way of moving beyond the discussion stage and
into action on an ongoing problem.

The cost of the drug and alcohol addiction prevention service is being
paid through a $55,000 grant from the Penny Lane Bargain Outlet.

The money is significant but it is also an important investment in our
community's future.

By dealing with these issues now, we may be able to prevent some
serious drug-related problems from plaguing our community in the future.
