OFFICER INNOCENT

Cop Wasn't Drunk, Attorney Says

The attorney for a State Police agent arrested on a charge of drunken
driving says the officer wasn't driving drunk and that his arrest by
Albuquerque police compromised a major drug investigation.

Attorney Sam Bregman said that when officer John Lytle was arrested
Wednesday, he was working on an undercover operation that included
buying methamphetamine.

"Part of his cover included drinking beers with the bad guys," Bregman
said.

"Not only was John not driving drunk, but some very large drug dealers
may now not be prosecuted because of APD's action," the attorney said.

Said Albuquerque police spokesman John Walsh, "There is never a time
or excuse for operating or being in control of a motor vehicle while
under the influence of alcohol. Never."
