A CHOICE BESIDES BOOZE, TOBACCO

Re the study that found no link between marijuana and lung cancer,
even among heavy users (Friday): We know cigarettes cause cancer. We
know alcohol abuse causes death. We know marijuana does not cause
cancer or death.

What we don't know is, why is marijuana still illegal?

Nearly 20 years ago, the Drug Enforcement Administration's chief
administrative law judge, Francis L. Young, ruled: "Marijuana, in its
natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known ."

Marijuana is safer than alcohol or tobacco. Not one death or cancer
has ever been attributed to it. For many, it's a life-saving
medicine. Yet last year over half a million people were arrested for
marijuana possession only. Shouldn't responsible adults be able to
legally choose a safer, saner intoxicant?
