ALL SCHOOLS SET TO GET DRUG TESTS

RANDOM drug tests may be introduced in all secondary schools after
the scheme helped one get its best exam results.

A full pilot programme is being prepared and the Government has
signalled it will back schools who want the tests.

They would not be mandatory and head-teachers and parents would be
asked if their pupils should take part.

The autumn pilot will be open to schools in Kent where The Abbey
School in Faversham pioneered the system.

Headmaster at the time, Peter Walker, praised its
success.

"There's less disruption in the classroom, fewer incidents in the
playground or on the way to school."

Mr Walker is now helping government drug czar John Walters to develop
guidelines for a grassroots approach to drugs.
