BANK GIVES TO DARE PROGRAM

HERKIMER - Adirondack Bank in Herkimer recently presented a check to the Herkimer Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, in place at both Herkimer Elementary School and St.  Francis de Sales Regional Catholic School.

Herkimer DARE Officer Anthony Brindisi said the community support is what makes the Herkimer DARE program, which recently wrapped up at both schools capped by graduation ceremonies, so special.

"It's a cooperative effort between the school, community and parents.  Herkimer is second to none when it comes to community support," said Brindisi.  "We are fortunate that the fight is strong here and the commitment from the village is strong."

The program is part of the regular curriculum for sixth graders at the schools and runs for 12-17 weeks.  Brindisi, who is in his third year as a DARE Officer, visits each school once a week during this time.  The program seeks to educate children about the dangers of drug abuse while also teaching students self-respect and self-esteem.

In visits with other DARE officers around the state, Brindisi said they're often startled with the support the 12-year-old Herkimer program receives.  Brindisi said numerous local businesses and individuals make it a habit to donate to DARE every year without fail, some donating even just a few dollars.  Brindisi said all donations are appreciated, no matter how small.

"We are pleased to be able to help out the program," said Adirondack Bank vice president and Herkimer branch manager Bob Brenchley.

The Herkimer DARE program is entirely self-sufficient thanks to this support, remarked Brindisi, who has been selected to attend DARE mentor training school in New Jersey.  He will be training other police officers on how to become DARE officers themselves.

"It's a great honor," he said.
